🧭 China Seeks Strategic Alliance With India Against U.S. Tariff Policies
Amid escalating global trade tensions, China has formally reached out to India, calling for greater cooperation to push back against what it calls the “United States’ abuse of tariffs” under the renewed leadership of Donald Trump.
In a statement issued on April 8, 2025, the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi emphasized the importance of China-India unity in resisting unilateral trade measures and fostering fair global trade practices.

Embassy spokesperson Yu Jing said:
“China and India, as the two largest developing economies, must work together to uphold multilateralism and defend global trade norms. The United States’ unilateral tariff abuse disrupts global trade stability and undermines economic cooperation.”
This move reflects China’s strategic pivot to regional diplomacy amid deepening tensions with Washington. The spokesperson also highlighted the complementary nature of the China-India trade relationship, suggesting it could become a foundation for deeper economic collaboration.
🇺🇸 Trump’s Tariff Escalation: A Renewed Trade War
The Trump administration, reinstated in 2025, has imposed a 34% tariff on over $200 billion worth of Chinese goods, citing national interest and unfair trade practices. In retaliation, China slapped tariffs on key American imports and warned of further escalation if trade negotiations fail.
The Chinese Commerce Ministry condemned the U.S. tariffs as coercive and in violation of WTO principles.
🇮🇳 India’s Diplomatic Tightrope
While India has also faced tariff challenges from the U.S., with a 26% tariff hike on its exports, New Delhi has taken a more bilateral approach by attempting to finalize a trade pact with Washington to secure market access and favorable terms.
Despite China’s appeal, India has not publicly committed to any anti-U.S. alliance, maintaining a careful diplomatic balance between economic cooperation with the U.S. and regional solidarity with China.
🌍 Global Impact and Rising Trade Alliances
Other Asian economies such as Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia are also expressing concerns over U.S. protectionism, opening doors to regional trade realignments.
China’s outreach to India suggests a potential shift in South-South cooperation, with developing nations exploring new alliances to counterbalance Western trade pressure.
