In a historic turn for Indian cinema, “Chhaava” has officially surpassed the box office earnings of “Stree 2”, earning its place as the seventh highest-grossing Indian film of all time. The epic period drama, directed by Laxman Utekar and starring Vicky Kaushal in a commanding lead role, continues its dominant run both in India and overseas.

As of this week, Chhaava has amassed a staggering ₹1,245 crore globally, edging past Stree 2, which previously held the #7 position with a lifetime collection of ₹1,210 crore. Trade analysts attribute this success to the film’s widespread appeal, powerful storytelling, and strategic global release.

Box Office Breakdown:
- Domestic Gross: ₹765 crore
- Overseas Collections: ₹480 crore
- Total Worldwide Gross: ₹1,245 crore
Film critics have praised Chhaava for its emotional depth, stunning visuals, and Kaushal’s gritty portrayal of the Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Its success also marks a major win for Marathi historical narratives in mainstream Hindi cinema.
Competition & Context:
Stree 2, a horror-comedy sequel starring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor, enjoyed a strong theatrical run since its release last year. However, Chhaava’s scale, performances, and patriotic theme seem to have struck a deeper chord with audiences.
Trade expert Taran Adarsh commented,
“Chhaava’s box office journey has been phenomenal. It’s rare for a historical film to achieve such numbers without a festival release slot.“
With Chhaava still running in several multiplexes and IMAX screens across major cities, industry insiders speculate it could inch closer to the Top 5 club, which includes behemoths like Baahubali 2, RRR, and Jawan.
What’s Next?
The makers are now eyeing a digital release on Netflix in the coming months, which could further boost its reach and cultural impact. Merchandise, OTT spin-offs, and a sequel are also reportedly under discussion.
